Jordan Corey: OurStage Artist Of The Week

“A Stax Records vibe with an indie twist.” This is what Jordan Corey, our Artist of the Week, set out to achieve with her most recent recordings, and she has succeeded admirably. Truthfully, this has long been her vibe, but she just keeps getting better at it. And with the recent release of her Trilogy – a fan-funded trio of songs, each with an accompanying video – she has surpassed “throwback” to create original and insistently modern music.
Corey’s songs are clearly rooted in classic soul, but this is just a palette from which she tastefully selects elements to color her rather timeless songs. The Trilogy videos are a good illustration of this. Two of them, “Final Goodbye” and “Hold Me Under” are dark and troubled songs, with videos filmed in gritty black and white. The third, “Here Rite Now,” bears a breezier optimism, with an inviting Wurlitzer electric piano and shades of Dusty Springfield, with an easygoing clip shot appropriately in color. Contrast the latter song with the former two tracks’ beds of sultry horns and foreboding staccato rhythms. “Hold Me Under” in particular is the most characteristically eclectic, with organic drums made to sound selectively electronic and a subtle coldness to the verse’s lead vocal (a blended vocoder, it sounds like), which all bursts into an overwhelmingly warm, driving hook of a chorus.
With this kind of demonstrable artistic progress (you can hear some of Corey’s earlier, and no less enjoyable, songs on her OurStage page), we really look forward to her new full-length, which she’s producing herself, and which is due this fall.
