As comfortingly familiar as certain strains of retro-tinged garage rock can be, it often has a downside of being perfectly predictable. Not too bad a downside, of course, if you’re just trying to recapture the raw excitement of vintage rock. But it’s so much more thrilling to hear the classic tape echo tones and amped-up fuzz-jangle taking unexpected musical turns. That’s what Australia’s Royal Chant has brought us with their new track, “I Get A Kick Out Of Being Kicked Around By You.” It’s a great title, to begin with, and the Merseybeat groove of the track is a baseline for inventive melodies and chord changes that never do quite what you expect them to to. Royal Chant has cleverly paired the song with some cut together ’70s-era home movies to complete the vintage vibe. Watch below.

The flashy, glammy, rocking powerhouse known as Kat Robichaud has spent the last couple of years focused on her live production of the Misfit Cabaret, “a splendiferous variety show centered around magical music with a rotating cast of eccentric performers.” From the clips we’ve seen, it’s quite a spectacle. So we cannot wait to see how this endeavor informs her brand new album, for which she recently dropped a teaser. The short video is primarily a trailer for the ever-evolving Cabaret performances, but the music is a clip from the upcoming album, and the projects are intrinsically intertwined. For each new Misfit Cabaret event, Robichaud has been writing a couple of new originals, and so we can expect to hear a lot of that music on June 2nd, when the album is released.

Woodstock NY’s Ghost Against Ghost have released a track from their forthcoming album still love. The new song is called “Unarm,” and it is a massive, spaced-out blast of streaming riffs, thundering drums, off-kilter chords, and cathartic distorted noise, all couched in the dreamy glow of an ocean of reverb.
The LP will be released on April 14th via Our Silent Canvas in two versions; the first is the more subtle “audiophile” version, dynamic and challenging, while the second is a more standard commercial master in keeping with current industry standards. One of last month’s Finals winners, Konshens The MC, often performs with his seven-piece band State of Mind. A recent project of the group is Classically Dope, a show that incorporates with the band a classical ensemble. We wanted to share this great video of them performing Konshens’ winning track “Militant” at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts back on February 8th.
